Surfing Skills & Techniques – Duck Diving
Duck Diving
When you are paddling and there is a breaking wave that is over two feet, you need to duck under it and get out of its way to avoid its impact which can be powerful. This is called Duck Diving, a technique which experienced surfers are knowledgeable of. As the name suggests, this technique is similar to how ducks dive under the waves that come their way. Know how to duck-dive in this section:
- Paddle toward an oncoming wave at maximum speed.
- As the wave approaches, hold the rails tightly and shift your weight forward. Push the nose of the Surfing Board down and under the water. Let your body follow.
- As the wave passes over you, push the tail of your board with your dominant knee, simultaneously pulling the nose up.
Proper timing is crucial in Duck Diving, and this can only be achieved through experience. Know when to go under the water and when to break the surface.
As a beginner, you do not necessarily have to learn to duck dive, since the board for beginners is not suitable for this technique. But it will do you good if you know how it is done before you actually try it. With proper timing and enough practice, you will be able to pull it off.
