Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, June 5) – The Philippine surfing team ended its campaign in the 2021 ISA World Surfing Games – an Olympic qualifying event – after its top two surfers got eliminated in the repechage rounds.

In the men’s division, former World Surfing League qualifying leg champion John Mark Tokong finished last in the fourth round of the losers’ bracket with 5.20 points. He failed to carry his momentum from his first place finish in the third repechage round, where he scored 10.73 points.

The two other male surfers, Edito Alcala Jr., and Jay-R Esquivel, were booted out of the competition in the second round of the losers’ bracket.

Meanwhile, 2019 Southeast Asian Games gold medalist Nilbie Blancada was the best performing Filipino surfer in the Olympic qualifiers held at El Salvador after she reached the fifth repechage round. She finished third in her bracket with 9.46 points, also failing to duplicate her first place standing in the fourth repechage round.

2019 SEA Games bronze medalist Daisy Valdez made her exit in the third round of the losers’ bracket, while teen surfer Vea Estrellado wounded up last in the second repechage round.

The Filipino surfers were guided by Ian Saguan.
