US Open of Surfing Spectator Has Watched Zero Actual Waves After Three Full Days, Cites “Genuinely Incredible” Food Trucks

Huntington Beach visitor reports fullest possible experience of the world’s largest surf competition despite never once looking at the ocean

HUNTINGTON BEACH — Local attendee Brenda Kowalczyk has attended all three days of this year’s US Open of Surfing, the world’s largest surf competition, and has reportedly not watched a single wave, heat, or actual surfer, having instead spent the entirety of her visit systematically working through what she describes as “an absolutely stacked food truck lineup, genuinely life-changing stuff.”

A Full Accounting of Her Three Days

Day one involved two full hours in line for a specific fusion taco truck Kowalczyk had seen recommended online, followed by a lengthy debate with her sister about whether a second visit to the same truck constituted “excessive” on only the first day. It did not, they concluded, and she returned twice more before day one ended.

The Competition Itself, As Far As She’s Aware

When asked who was currently winning the men’s or women’s division, Kowalczyk paused for a genuinely long moment before admitting she “assumed it was still happening somewhere down the beach” but couldn’t confirm this with any real certainty, having not walked in that general direction since Friday morning.

Her Sister’s Slightly Different Experience

Kowalczyk’s sister, also in attendance, reported watching “maybe four minutes total” of actual surfing, mostly by accident while walking between two food trucks she’d specifically targeted, describing the surfing itself as “honestly pretty impressive, from the little bit I saw.”

Event Organizers Respond

A spokesperson for the event noted this is not, technically, an unusual pattern, citing internal survey data suggesting a meaningful percentage of attendees engage primarily with the food and merchandise offerings rather than the actual sporting competition the event nominally exists to showcase.

What Kowalczyk Plans to Do Differently Next Year

“Honestly, probably the same thing,” she said, already researching next year’s expected food truck lineup. “I heard they might get that birria guy back. I’d skip actual surfing for that any day.” Further US Open of Surfing coverage continues at bohiney.com.
