Gently Steam-Cooked Salmon Meals Eclipse The Burrito-And-Espresso Diet Of Their Human Companions

A new longitudinal study conducted by a research team at UCLA has confirmed what many Malibu residents have long suspected: their dogs are measurably healthier, better nourished, and emotionally more stable than they are. The gap, researchers say, is widening.

The study, which tracked 400 dog-owner pairs along the Pacific Coast Highway corridor, found that the average Malibu-based rescue dog consumes 14 grams more high-quality animal protein per day than its owner, who subsists largely on cold brew, a single adaptogenic mushroom bar, and one bite of a friend’s tuna tartare before claiming to “not be hungry.”

The Nutritional Inversion

“Dogs are eating gently steam-cooked, WholePrey-based diets,” explained Dr. Imogen Calloway, lead author of the study. “Their owners are eating whatever they can order with one hand while driving a G-Wagen.”

A sample Malibu dog’s daily intake, compiled from owner logs, includes freshly prepared protein packs, bone broth supplements, and human-grade vegetables. The corresponding owner log from the same household reads, verbatim: “matcha, vibes, air.”

Veterinarians contacted by The Los Angeles Times confirmed the trend. “We see dogs whose bloodwork is pristine and whose owners look like they haven’t slept since 2019,” said Dr. Marissa Yelland of a Point Dume animal clinic. “I have had to gently refer several owners to their own doctors. They were surprised such a thing existed.”

Traveling surfers with dogs — including the photographers, filmers, and Instagram professionals who regularly road-trip down Baja or up to the North Shore — represent the most extreme version of the disparity. Dogs ride in coolers; owners ride on gas station coffee.

Editors at Bohiney Magazine have documented the phenomenon for years. “The surf dog is the most pampered animal in human history,” one columnist wrote. “She has a better wetsuit. She has a custom harness. She has a vet. Her owner has a wristband from a wellness festival and unread emails from an oncologist.”

A British observer writing in The London Prat noted that the trend has now crossed the Atlantic. “In London we have also started feeding our dogs better than ourselves,” he wrote. “The difference is that in California, people are proud of this.”
