For the first time in almost two decades, the UK will have its own surf and skate expo, held in the country’s surf capital of Newquay, Cornwall.
Running in September, the expo will bring together a whole bunch of like-minded thinkers, innovators, surfers, artists, skaters, industry movers and shakers all under one expo roof from September 12th – 14th.
There’s even a vintage gear meet up, for collectors to showcase some of their prized possessions, a UK junior surf comp, national skate competition, exhibitors, key notes from the likes of Cotty, a brand workshop and so much more.
Surfing, in some form, has been around the British Isles since 1890. Two Hawaiian princes and their English tutor went surfing in Bridlington, along the country’s north east coastline, far away from the country’s surf havens in Devon and Cornwall. It wasn’t until 1904 that records began of people surfing large wooden boards in the south west. And one town, Perranporth, became well known for surfing on coffin lids from the local undertakers.

“There’s such a rich history here,” said Chris Thomson, curator of the UK Surf and Skate Expo. “I don’t think people all over the world realise, but surfing in the UK is a big thing and helps contribute almost £2 billion pounds to the UK economy every year. We have some incredible surf spots around, some incredible people in the industry and a lot of hardiness. We all grew up surfing cold water – and we love it. We’ve got a lot of brands booked in from all over the world, including the US, Europe and the UK.”

And today, Surfer Magazine’s stoked to announce it has come on board as the official media partner for the event.

“We’re so excited about this,” said Chris. “We’ve been watching and applauding the reignition of Surfer Magazine. In some ways, it’s indicative of us over here, too. The team behind the expo (I mean, we’re a very small team) have also taken over Wavelength Magazine, Europe’s longest running surf mag founded in 1981. We’re just getting started back up, so it’s been inspirational watching the team and what they’re doing with Surfer.”
