North Shore Surf Collective’s newest performance shortboard has been named Liminal, which the brand’s product description page defines as “a board for the in-between: the moment between takeoff and commitment, between the known and the possible, between who you were before the wave and who you are after it.” The name was selected, according to the brand’s creative director Sarah Kim, through a half-day team workshop using a creative facilitation methodology called “purposeful naming,” in which team members were asked to map the board’s performance characteristics onto conceptual space rather than geographical or biographical reference points. Previous boards in the North Shore line have been named after points, people, and local breaks. The Liminal is the first to be named after a phenomenological concept. The board retails at $840.
