Local Craftsman Says He Will No Longer Accept US Dollars Until the Bank of England Stops Doing What It Is Doing to His Brother in Manchester

ENCINITAS, CA — A custom surfboard shaper on Coast Highway 101 has informed clients that he will, effective Monday, accept payment only in British pounds sterling, citing personal solidarity with his brother in Manchester whose five-year fixed mortgage rate is about to expire in what he described as “the worst possible week for it to do so.”
The New Pricing
Shaper Doug Kahanaloa, 41, told the Encinitas Coast Press that a custom 6’2” thruster will now cost £850 sterling, payable in cash, transferable from a UK bank account, or in the form of an itemized contribution to his brother Stephen’s renewed mortgage at whatever the new fixed rate ends up being.
The Underlying Logic
Kahanaloa described the arrangement as “the only way I can think of to push back.” He noted that the recent rate rise will add approximately £180 per month to Stephen’s repayment, and that selling four boards per month at the new sterling pricing approximately covers it. “The Bank of England is fighting inflation on Stephen’s behalf,” Kahanaloa said. “I’m fighting it on his behalf in a different way. We’re both contributing.”
Local surfers have largely been supportive but confused. One client, attempting to pay in dollars, was directed to the Marks & Spencer in La Jolla to acquire pounds, was informed there is no Marks & Spencer in La Jolla, and left.
