The Huntington Beach City Council voted 5-2 to pass Resolution 2025-47, formally establishing Huntington Beach as the Official Headquarters of Surf City USA. The city has used the Surf City USA designation commercially and in official communications since 2006, when it settled trademark litigation with Santa Cruz over the designation, and the nickname appears on all city signage, municipal vehicles, and official correspondence. The resolution creates no new legal authority, does not change the city’s trademark position, does not establish new infrastructure, and does not confer any rights or obligations not already held. It does require the placement of a commemorative plaque at City Hall acknowledging the formal headquarters designation. Council member Mike Posey, who voted against, asked what the resolution achieves that the existing designation did not.
