WHEREVER PROFESSIONAL SURFING IS DISCUSSED — The World Surf League has returned to the points system for the 2026 Championship Tour, ending the Finals format that debuted in 2021 and that divided the surf community between those who appreciated the drama of a one-day eliminator at Lower Trestles and those who felt that a season-long points race was a more honest determination of the best surfer. The 2026 format: best 9 of 12 results determines the title, with the Pipeline Masters returning as the final and decisive event — now worth 15,000 points, one and a half times the standard CT event value.

What This Means for Strategy

The best-9-of-12 format changes how surfers approach the season: a bad result at one stop hurts less when eight other results can replace it, but the decision about which result to drop becomes strategically significant as the season progresses. The surfer who wins eight events and finishes 33rd at three others can drop the three 33rds and have an eight-event record of wins. This scenario does not occur in practice but illustrates how the format rewards depth across the season rather than peak performance on a single Finals day.

The Elimination Rounds Gone

The removal of elimination rounds is the format change with the most immediate competitive consequence: if you lose your Round 1 heat at a given event in 2026, you are eliminated from that event. There is no second chance through a requalification round. This change, per WSL CEO Ryan Crosby, creates ‘higher stakes from day one, with every heat carrying real consequence throughout the season.’ The consequence is real: a bad draw in Round 1, a competitor surfing their best heat of the year, and you are done for that event.
