Self-Appointed Wave Steward Cites Bank of England Methodology, Begins Charging $50 Per Set

VENICE, CA — A local surfer at the Venice Breakwater announced Saturday morning that he will personally manage demand for the one good peak by charging fellow surfers $50 per set, citing what he described as “the same logic the Bank of England uses, which I read about in that piece about the sandwich.”
The New Pricing Structure
Brian “Sea Hag” Whitford, 52, a local who has been surfing the Breakwater since approximately 1987, explained the system to the Marina del Rey Gazette in operational detail. The first wave of any set costs $50. The second wave is $35. The third is $20. Subsequent waves are free, but by then the set is over and the next set is, by Whitford’s pricing structure, also $50.
The Macroeconomic Justification
“The thing the Bank of England understands,” Whitford told reporters, “is that if people are enjoying something, that’s where you have to apply the pressure. It’s not personal. It’s policy. They call it cooling demand. I’m calling it the same thing. I read the article.”
Asked whether the system applied to him, Whitford clarified that he was, in his self-appointed role, the central bank rather than a participant. “Andrew Bailey doesn’t pay rate rises on his own mortgage either,” he said, in a sentence that was, on close examination, factually questionable but rhetorically committed.
Local lifeguards have requested that Whitford stop. He has, on every available indicator, declined.
